GIST
ARJUNA was full of compassion. His eyes were inundated with tears. He was sad.

BLOGGER'S EXPLANATION AND ANALYSES
Arjuna was the third brother among the five Pandava prices, who were waging for to get back their share of the Kuru kingdom. Arjuna felt miserable when he saw the faces of his grand fathers, teachers, brothers, uncles and other relatives whom he had to slay to get back their share. He felt this unreasonable and expressed his unhappiness to Krishna.

Krishna was the preceptor of Gita.

Krishna taught Gita's second chapter "Sankhya Yoga" to Arjuna, after seeing his tears filled face.
The Saankhya yoga deals with body and soul relationship.
Sankhya means 'count'. The Saankhya philosophy of sage Kapila in Hindu philosophy dealt with the 24 elements of nature such as earth, water, fire, wind, sky, sense organs of body such as eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, functional organs of body such as limbs, and the internal esoteric elements of body such as mind, intellect, ego, inclination etc.

But this Chapter 2 of Gita does not much deal with the Saankhya philosophy of Kapila. This chapter is an independent preaching.

Arjuna's depression, according to Krishna, was born out of Arjuna's ignorance.
The 72 verses in this Chapter tried to dispel the ignorance (according to Krishna's perception) of Arjuna.

I, personally feel, that Arjuna was not ignorant. His depression was justified, considering the disastrous ramifications of a catastrophic war (These, he dedscribed in Chapter 1).

Krishna was keen that Arjuna should fight the war. Hence, he gave a pep talk from Chapters 2 to 18. Gita was nothing in essence, but a pep talk intended to instigate a war which was quite unnecessary.

IMPORTANT
No historic evidence exists that Mahabharata epic and the war took place. Mahabharata could even be a piece of literature.
